Hi I’m Richard Moats – Fishing Guide here in Montana

Just a quick note my grandparents homesteaded about 200 miles north of the Big Horn River. I was born in Billings MT. and our families cattle ranch was fifty miles north of Billings.” Yup I’m a local” I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO YOUR TRIP, maybe discussing a fly pattern, how to fish IT,  or just have a cup of coffee. Best of all a day on the river.

I would like to share a view of the Big Horn from a guides view if I may. January/February are months of anticipation prepping the boat replace flyrods, reels and lines, leaders and tippets. The river continues to drift down the valley absent of boats and shore fishermen.

The fish have retaken the whole river. If you’re a Jeremy Johnston you will float on nice days encountering ice at the launch, ice in the guides and packing 3 gallons of hot chocolate to get you to 3 mile take out. The fish are there and feeding, but mostly there ARE JUST WATCHING YOU FALL ON THE ICE

This is a great time to go thru your fly boxes and dig out the ones stuck in the hinges and put them in order. But if you like tranquility, peace and good nymph fishing come ahead. Don’t be in a hurry to get on the river and don’t stay to long! { I fish Ray Charles- grey, fire bead sowbug and, zebra midges.}

Toward the end of February, I will get very focused on the places that clients caught fish last year and in previous years.  Without fail I find a new piece of water that holds fish daily. But hey that’s why you hire a guide that goes down the river almost every day. I can’t open the fish’s mouth, for you  but I can  take you where they are feeding. Your job is to present the nymph to the fish, feel him pick it up and set the hook in a mild manner, not tearing it out of fishes mouth.

I see so many large fish caught and lost due to this hang on for dear life. Remember you have a very small hook in a soft tissue mouth with a very wild trout. If you fish with me I will go over this before we start. Lets all see if we can get a picture instead of a memory of these fish. Video will be available if the opportunity will allow it from my boat. If you’re not versed in this fishing technique, ask about our fly-fishing school it will be the best money you ever spent. A two-day school on the river will give you the confidence to fish anywhere. If you or a family member are new, or struggle come by we will guide you gentle in to a life time of good memories. Ladies this is for you as well.

I can only advise you to book these schools early as we only have a few dates available and as spring comes schools fill up . With that said please don’t pass up a lesson on the grass or an evening  on the river, I will personally help you, I will find a time or get you someone else that can help!

 I have a passion for helping you get better, at all aspects of fly fishing, Questions about Schools, lesson Email the office or call me with 406-581-1834 any time if no answer leave a message say the word fishing, I will call you back.   FISHING.OK.

Late May Fishing Report 2021

Flows have dropped to 2000 CFS but the fish don’t seem to mind. It’s that time of year again for the rainbow spawn! So please be mindful of the spawn and stay off the reds. Try avoiding the clear patches of gravel and let these fish reproduce. Dry fly fishing is starting to make its…
