Late May Fishing Report 2020

Date: May 23, 2020
Flows: 2040 CFS
Water Temp: 42 F

The river is back open and fishing great. River levels are low sitting at 2040 cfs, which makes wading anglers have free range to walk around the river, but we ask anglers to be mindful of the spawning Rainbows! That’s right rainbows have begun to spawn on the Bighorn River, so please avoid stepping on the cleaned out patches of gravel. Nymphing has been consistent throughout the day with most of our luck coming on smaller mayfly and midge patterns such as flashback quill nymph (18,20) tung teaser (18,20,22) greenie weenie (18,20) and of course you can always rely on the bighorn staples like ray Charles, orange scuds, and soft hackles. On cloudier days the dry fly fishing can be phenomenal, but most evenings you can find pods of risers once the wind calms down. The go to patterns have been Griffiths gnat (16,18) black smoke jumper (18,20) sipper midge (18,20,22) and the student (16,18,20). Streamer fishing has been relatively slow but if you put in the work there are bites to be had fishing slow and deep.
