It has been a wonderful first year as the new owners of Cottonwood Camp! We have enjoyed getting to know all of you who make Cottonwood Camp the “Bighorn Tradition”.
Our focus last season was on making capital improvements to the cabins and campground. We also purchased a new fleet of drift boats, installed a Point of Sale system in the fly shop and improved the internal processes so that we can serve our guests better. As we look forward into 2015 our plans are to continue to improve and remodel cabins, complete the installation of the new septic system, put the finishing touches on our new shop as well as more behind-the-scenes improvements such as a new reservation system!
As always, we welcome your suggestions as to what you would like to see for improvements at your “Bighorn Tradition” and we look forward to seeing you all in 2015!
Fish (and Duck) Tales
January started off cold and snowy with average to below-average fishing. As the month progressed we saw record high temps (yes…60 degree days in January) with above-average fishing. The water levels have remained steady in the 2800 CFM range and water temperatures around 41 degrees. Nymphing has been good with midges and scuds being the most productive. As always, streamer fishing has been okay.
A few weeks ago Phil had the opportunity to take advantage of waterfowl hunting on the Bighorn. A big thank you to Bob Frey and his dog Jude for making this a memorable hunt. This year proved to be a banner year for this group of sportsmen with record harvests of both ducks and geese.
All seasons prove to be a great time to be in the outdoors and enjoying the pleasures of the Bighorn River. The winter months can be an exceptionally special time to take advantage of the quiet and solitude that the river offers. Until next time…stay warm, have fun and keep the tales coming!
