Bighorn River Fishing Report Mid-April 2017

Date: April 13, 2017
Flows: 10,300 CFS
Water Temp: 41.5 F

Nymphing continues to keep the net full!

Hot bugs continue to be the staples: Firebead sowbugs/rays in #14-16, Soft Hackle Sowbugs #16-18 Grey or Pink, #14-16 Orange scuds, trailed by a smaller sowbug, scud, or midge pattern. #20 Blue glass bead midges and purple zebras have been a hot dropper if you can keep the fish buttoned.

With the upswing in water temperature, we have been seeing more midges and more fish looking up. Black Smoke Jumpers and small Griffiths Gnats have been the go to.

The streamer bite has still been hit and miss, but it’s guaranteed fun! With about 5 times more water coming out of the dam than normal, the banks are full and every bank looks like a streamer bank. Be sure to stock up on bugs and use some stout Maxima as those pockets between russian olives are small and you’ll need to be able to yank your flies back from the clutches of those dang squirrels that love to steal your flies.

Hot colors have been white on the sunny and clear days, and olive or black on those days with overcast skies. Both sink tips and floating lines have produced fish.
