Date: March 29, 2017
Flows: 9000 CFS
Water Temp: 38 F
Yes, flows increased again today but don’t worry, the fish are very happy and the river is clean. Another plus side to the high water is all the side channels are full and holding fish, these have been producing some great wading holes.
Nymphing has produced fish that the Bighorn is known for! And it’s not too complicated, stick to the staples: Fire-bead Soft Hackle Rays in grey or pink #14-18, Soft hackle sow bugs in tan or pink #14-16, scuds #14-16, and Zebras (pick your favorite color) #18-20, , but be sure to add more weight when boat fishing and pick slower spots for wade fishing.
Dry Fly fishing has been limited, but on the right nights a black Smokejumper #20 with an zebra dropper has been effective. The dry fly fishing will increase as the water temperature does.
Streamer fishing has been okay. Slow presentations have been the most effective, and smaller streamers have produced a few more fish. Sink tip is not needed if your fishing the skinny water, but is effective for your longer, deeper runs.
